Anybody recommend local producers of meat, fruit & veg? The big supermarkets are still making healthy profits during the recession and I'd rather source my food locally. It's probably gonna be cheaper and better quality locally anyway.

There is a farm shop in Crick just by the railway bridge. He does great fruit and veg and also sells eggs. it's not that well signposted though so drive slowly to avoid passing it. It's on the main A48 on the right as you head out of Crick.

There is the community shop at Parc Seymour. They sell local eggs and butter etc and are open from 8.00 until 12.00 I think.

Chepstow Garden Centre has a great farm shop there. There is a local butcher and he sells good qaulity meat.

Thanks Sallie, we'll try the shop in Crick. Forogt about Penhow shop, we'll pop over there this weekend.

We have been to the Chepstow farm shop but if I remember correctly, the chicken was a little on the expensive side (I go through about 2Kg a week). But you do get what you pay for as I also remeber it being much leaner than any supermarket produce. I think I'll pop along and see what price I can get for bulk buying.

Thanks for the help, I'll post a reponse on how I got on.

Quick update, bought some chicken from Chepstow farm shop (?30 worth) and although notably good quality, the loose packaging made it cumbersome to freeze. I had to wrap each chicken breast individually before I could put it into the freezer.

I am all for helping the environment by reducing the amount of packing we use but it was a rather messy and time consuming task.

I'll be visiting Penhow and Crick shops next ... watch this space..

Couldn't manage to get orgnanised enough to get to Penhow shop by midday close but did go to farm shop in Crick (thanks Sallie). Not easy to find but a great range of good quality locally grown fruit & veg and very reasonably priced as well, highly recommended.:thumb:

Hi,
There is a farm shop just on the left as you go towards Magor - not far from the turn-off past the Gulf Garage - it's mainly vegetables, but really good quality and good value. There is a sign, but from memory, it's easier to see coming from the other direction, so you might pass it first time.

The Farm Shop is at Ford Farm on the Magor Road. There's veg for sale and I'm told its very good quality at a good price.:)

Cheers all, I'll give the shop a go.

Apparently, :gossip: there's also a trade butcher on the way to Tescos who also sells to the public, gonna try that as well.
