I was joking on here just the other day that the footpath approaching the Coldra would probably lead to a zebra crossing or lollipop lady! Guess what... today I saw them putting pedestrian controls on the lights opposite the Hamburger lane. I can only imagine the waiting times when the traffic on and off the Coldra has to wait for people to cross as well as flow of traffic. Is it just me or is this only going to be for those attending the Ryder Cup and staying at the Stakis, if so it seems a lot of expense for few people.

I do not think many pedestrians or cyclists will choose to take in the scenic delights of the Coldra roundabout.....

oh wait ...

was that a landscaping team I just saw ? - "Ground Force" takes on the Coldra roundabout ?.

Its a mystery to me. Is there any way in which we can view plans for the works being carried out? Using the Coldra every day, I am amazed at the amount of work and people there, but to what end? it probably makes sense to someone?

I suppose there is a masterplan at the City Council offices. However, the chaos seems to suggest that this project has taken on a life of it's own. Maybe someone spilt coffee on the plans?

Bit more background info about the project. Not the cost, 3.5 million!!

The aim of the project is to improve the traffic capacity of the Coldra gyratory in readiness for the 2010 Ryder Cup and to allow for future traffic growths. It is anticipated that the benefits to the local residents will be the elimination of future queues and improve the traffic flows, thus reducing congestion and pollutants.

From the modeling of the traffic at the Coldra interchange and to increase the capacity for traffic flow, it is proposed that a new ‘hamburger lane’ underneath the existing M4 viaduct to allow traffic coming from the A449 to gain better access to the M4 westbound on slip will be constructed. There is also provision of new dedicated lane from the M4 westbound offslip to the Newport Southern Distributor Road, and a third lane off the Southern Distributor Road onto the gyratory, will provide increased capacity within the gyratory. The gyratory will also be widened to four lanes and minor modifications made to the A449 and Chepstow Road approaches. Roadmarkings and new signals will be installed as part of the works.

The footpath appears to run from Taylors Roundabout up to the modified A449 Dual carriageway - where a light controlled crossing appears to take you across to the "hamburger lane" as it passes under the M4

I've not spotted where it comes out on the Holiday Inn side of the Coldra yet !!!
