Is anyone concerned enough about the general state of cleanliness along the A48 in Langstone - Hurrans area - to be interested in starting up a small workforce to clean up the grass verges, etc? A bit of litter collection could make a big difference to the appearance of the area - does anyone agree?
Do let me know if this is a possible project we could get off the ground.
Hi Alan
I would be willing to give up a few hours to clean up the area, count me in.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for your interest in my suggestion - much appreciated.
For the first time - ever!! - I noticed a council guy picking up rubbish yesterday morning. I'll take a look at how good a job he did as there may still be a need for some additional work.
I'll get back to you asap.
Thanks again for your offer of help.
Best regards,
Alan
Just to let you know I have 5 sets of litter picking equipment available if you need them. Gloves, hi-viz vests & litter picking sticks.
If you want to borrow them, give me a shout.

Hi Alan
I think 'low viz' vests might be better because if my neighbours see me they may think I am doing communtity service.
Depends what you write on the back Brian
Most of the rubbish seems to be from McDonalds and the Hilton. The Hilton has had a few of what look like school summer balls recently and now the verges in surrounding areas have a lot of emtpy alcopop bottles hanging around. Do these places not have some sort of responsibility to clean up the surrounding community after their guests leave?
The "guests " have a responsibility not to leave the litter ;)

Guys,
Has this thread developed any more? Are you still on for "litter picking" at Langstone, if so count me in. Perhaps we could take all the rubbish accumulated from around the Hilton and drop it in the hotel reception and then all the Macdonald wrappers can go back to their drive in. I think this is a good thread to pick up and run with as no other body e.g local council/councillors seem too worried about the litter in our environment so I would be happy to get involved and do my bit for the community. Alan can you pick this back up and lets get things going:)

:mad:The Community councillors are very proactive regarding the litter problem. If you came along to any of the meetings you would see that it is on the agenda on a regular basis. We have purchased litter picking equipment and hi viz vests for councillors to use. Many of us have been out and about picking up litter and the issue has been addressed at NCC by David Atwell. I have also noticed children getting off the Caerleon school bus dropping litter on the Catsash Road. These children are residents of Langstone so not all the litter can be blamed on McDonalds and the Hilton.

I'm glad to hear that "litter picking councillors" have been out and about and that the subject of "litter" is OFTEN on their agenda!! Why? what is there to discuss so often about litter?
If the community council has any spare monies perhaps they could think about purchasing litter bins as Langstone in general seems to be very short in supply. Could councillors perhaps "sponsor" litter bins and also approach MacDonalds and the local bus companies to do the same. Seems to be a lot of "dog litter" bins along our part of Chepstow Road but very few real litter bins. If bins were available especially on and around the bus stop areas then I am sure the public (including school children of Langstone) would use them appropriately.
Next time the councillors go litter picking perhaps they could advertise the fact on this community website beforehand so residents know what is going on and are given the chance to help in the tidy up.:israel:

Hi Everyone,
Interested to see that the footpaths and verges along the A48 have recently been tidied up - significant improvement at long last.
I guess this is the Ryder Cup influence - shame it took a golf tournament to get things moving!
Let's see if we can maintain the appearance post-Ryder Cup!
Keep an eye on the situation.

Agreed its good to see the A48 pavements repaired and coated.
Its just a pity that the weeds are pushing back through already - within a week !
A helpful man at NCC suggested that the weedkiller had not been as effective because of the wet July, but not to worry the work has a 5 yr warranty
It needs repairing already, certainly before the winter frosts get in and break it up again.
