We've all heard the tales from the previous two (and three) generations about how tough things were for them when they were kids. We found it hard to appreciate how hard things used to be, outside baths, food rations, hob nail boots etc.

In comparison, we lived the life of luxury as kids but now, as a parent, I find myself saying the same things to my kids. They now seem to be living a life of luxury compared to my childhood.

They find it hard to comprehend a world with no Internet, mobile phones, cars were a luxury and holidays abroad were reserved for the well off.

What tales of hardship do you tell your kids?

My Children used to complain about having to ride their bikes to School,,One story they used to hate listening to, was the time when my car broke down and needed a engine rebuild. It was in 1975 and I was living in the Handpost area in Newport. as we had just got married and renting, we didnt have a lot of spare money so I decide to fix the car myself. My Brother in law lent me a push bike with one gear, to get back and forth to work. The problem was I worked in a brake factory in New Inn, Pontypool. When I told the children that for 4-5 months I cycled 18 miles per day x 5 days a week, in all weather, they didnt believe me, and I'm sure they still dont. Although I didnt think it too difficult at the time, looking back we certainly did a lot of things out of necessity, that a lot of people might think twice about today.
