Does anyone know whether the avaerage speed cameras on junctions 24 to 29 are operational yet? People still seem to be travelling at higher speeds. If they are working I am surprised it hasn't made the local news as they must be issuing incredible amounts of tickets?

I'd be very surprised if they're not operational. They wouldn't go to the cost of installing them if they didn't intend to operate them.

They did do the usual trick of putting up the speed signs several weeks before the cameras (lulls everyone into false sense of security). This ploy caught me out when they introduced the M4 toll booth restrictions.

I have noticed a definite slowing down but yes, still is the occasional fool who ignores the limit - I'd also love to know if they do actually receive a fine in the post.

I happened to speak to a police traffic officer this week who informed me that the cameras are not operational yet, he seem to suggest that NCC have to accept a licence this paper work has yet to be done!

Just driven along the M4 this morning.

Had a smile, the gantry signs are warning of "Poor driving"

what do they know that I don't, or are they trying to warn me of " Poor conditions" :-)

Happy Christmas !

I work for a local Solicitor's firm, and we had a lady telephone on Friday just gone for advice on a fixed penalty notice she had received within the average speed area. Her average speed was 58mph. So they are definitely operational now :)

Thanks for the head up Kirstie. I've been religiously stick below 55, taking no chances. It is a bit of a pin going to work in the mornings but I have to admit the traffic is always flowing steadily coming home.

Maybe it is actually an effective move after all.
