View Full Version : Parking moan
Sorry, another moan about parking :( (there's more going on in Langstone than parking issues - honest!). This time cars were parked on both sides of the road just out side the cul-d-sac at the end of Priory Way.
Setting off for work this morning at 0615, there was no more than a few inches clearance both sides through the parked cars. Besides the owners total disregard for residents, aren't they concerned that their vehicle is potentially at risk from being 'scraped'?
Another concern is the inability for emergency services to access several houses in the cul-d-sac. Ambulances have been called to the area in the past and not being able to park outside the house concerned may have grace implications.
there is more going on than just parking, but it does cause major "stress  ! "
I suppose it was predictable that with the snow and ice Priory Drive would be over subscribed with parking.
10:30 this morning parked both sides from the roundabout all the way down to Ger y Parc :(
plus on the road around the roundabout outside Columbus House  and the short road leading to Taylors roundabout on the A48
update 10/1/10
I have been told that the Office management company have refused to clear the car park of snow and ice hence the increase in car parking in Priory Drive, and inconsiderate parking in Priory Way - thanks

It's a problem everywhere these days. Even in residential areas where some residents take the "easier" approach of parking on the street rather than using their own drive (the reversing is probably too difficult for them !).
Would it be an idea to ask the council to put double yellow lines down along one side of the road ?
The argument of fire trucks not being able to access properties further down the road is a really good one ;)

I am pretty sure that those commercial buildings had planning permission under the conditions that they are providing parking for staff. I think a letter to the council would be in order.
As we all experience every day the parking has not improved.
I hear that the Insurance company with a Call centre off Priory Drive as limited parking for its staff and has now introduced a parking charge - I guess this is behind the increase of inconsiderate / excessive parking.
Anyone else spotted the group of Honda's who park near the Columbus House roundabout early each morning - they have very similar registrations probably part of a Fleet being parked here.
I also hear that Yellow lines are being considered in time for the Ryder Cup - does NCC do anything other than prepare for this ? - so just where will the cars go - Priory Grove, Priory Way etc !!!!
I've also heard that parking charges have been introduced which would explain the sudden increase in the number of cars along Priory Drive.
I have also heard that yellow lines will be introduced along the entire length of Priory Drive along one side. I echo Steve's concerns, where will all these cars then park?, will they begin parking on the estate itself!
If they do start parking on the estate then this is something I'm personally not willing to tolerate and will do whatever I can do stop this.
Extra cones are out this morning - "fun and games" will no doubt start when the business park workers start arriving shortly.
The Business park side is fully coned leaving 1/2 the parking spaces along the housing side.

I saw the Rombourne lads putting the cones out Tuesday morning and the cones are still there this morning. Anyone know why Rombourne are doing this? Presumably they've been told to by Newport Council?
I was expecting the same as you Steve, 'fun & games' as the workers struggled to find spaces. I expected to find cars parked all over the ger-y-parc estate when I got home on Tuesday but was surprised to find that wasn't the case.
There were a few more cars parked further up Priory Drive (onto there red brick) than normal (I saw last night the house on the edge of the estate has put cones outside their drive - good for them).
I'm guessing this is all in preparation for when the council mark that entire length of Priory Drive with double yellow lines, I'm just surprised to see Rombourne taking action prior to this happening.
So maybe our parking woes are finally over :cheer2:(or at least greatly relieved) but it still leaves the question - where have all the workers parked?
There is also some activity on the last phase of the offices - possibly about to remove the hoarding ?
The "fun and games" were reserved for the strip of road outside the Electicity sub station - it was fling the cones as far as you can, followed in the afternoon by some kind soul who recovered them and placed them alongside the vehicles that had parked there !

The Argus has reported that Admiral are hoping to expand the Langstone call centre. They want to increase the headcount from 354 to 450. Given that the parking situation is already dire on Priory Drive, this is not exactly going to be welcome news for the residents. The yellow lines will just mean staff will park anywhere they can on the Ger Y Parc estate.
Here's the link (http://www.southwalesargus.co.uk/news/gwentnews/8355644.More_jobs_on_the_way_for_city/).
An extra 100 jobs or so of which the majority will probably drive to work! Here's hoping that Admiral will be providing parking spaces for these employees.
Gotta say that things are a lot better now that theres' no parking down one side of the road.
Can freely drive on and off the estate now without having to battle with the office workers.
You still need to take care - clearly some of the workers are only interested in getting home and not other road users
Yes the Admiral staff are now parking regularly in Priory Way
causing difficulties getting on and off our driveways
{ I'm not picking on Admiral, the driver of a car freely admitted that she was from Admiral and had no choice but to park in Priory Way, the issue is the lack of consideration being shown when vehicles exit the business park , and the "stupid" parking i.e. across junctions, driveways etc}
not acceptable, and in many cases is a Police matter - the law sets out how close you can park to a junction.
and not a good PR job for Admiral or others in the Offices
They can afford to sponsor the welsh rugby team but fail to provide adequate parking - perhaps this is funded by charging for staff parking :target:
Newport CC assured us that adequate parking would be provided by the Office development, clearly its not.
Looks like the parking restrictions will shortly be up and running in Priory Drive.
The posts and signs are in , yellow lines to follow.
However, at the Eastern end of Priory Drive just as it enters Ger-y-Parc "they" seem to have created a legal bottleneck - the signs imply that parking will be allowed on both sides of the road ( subject to max period and return time)
Is it me or is this the very problem that the parking restrictions were supposed to remove !!!!
The yellow lines are being laid - at last !!
A "parking bay" has been lined, however it is rather narrow for a car to park within the lines ;)
Lets see what impact this all has on parking IMHO it will just move the problem somewhere else
Was over the moon to see the yellow lines and parking bay, it's made a big difference.
Unless anyone else knows different, I haven't noticed an cars parking on the estate.
Sorry to upset up but yes one or two cars are being left in Priory Way...
Also cars are parking over the double yellow lines - enforcement is required before people realise what they can get away with :)

Steve, if you do see any cars parked on double yellow lines give the police a call with colour, make, model & reg No., if we keep pestrering them they WILL do something about it but if we don't report them then we only have ourselves to blame.
Alan
Will do, but it would be encouraging to see a "traffic warden" in the area too !
I agree Steve, I thought that was the intention for the first few week after the yellow lines were put down. I'll have a word with our Community Suport Officers to see if they will give the area a few extra visits. :D
Alan
Perhaps you can have a word with the PCSO - I tried but got the impression they were busy and would "try" to visit at some point in the future.
To put it in context the return call was 18 - 24 hours after the incident was reported....
