Hi! My name is Ceri and I am 21. I am currently having a few months out from a Paediatric nursing degree and to earn a little bit of extra cash I am going to offer myself as a babysitter. I live in Rogerstone, but my cousins Tristan and Claire live in Parc Seymour and Rebekah their daughter attends Langstone primary! I regularly babysit Rebekah and her sister Naomi and obviously have experience of looking after children from doing nearly three years of my children's nursing degree. If anyone would be interested in my services then contact me on ceri-s-livingstone@hotmail.co.uk
I am not going to start until july...covering the summer holidays and have not yet sorted out a price etc. but if anyone thinks they may need a babysitter over the holidays up until september then let me know. I will be willing to babysit in the Langstone and Parc seymour area. Hope to hear from some of you soon

The Green Lanes of Langstone

One of the reasons we chose to live in Langstone was the countryside, and the access to it, however on one of our first walks we ran into trouble when we tried following an old trackway up from the Old Barn at Llanmartin across the ridge to the mill on the A48. We got so far and found a gate blocking off the trackway and beyond it proved impassable as the vegetation was so overgrown. We came across a few over old sunken lanes like this, some near Pencoed Castle, and other opposite the Forrester's Pub. I contacted the Countryside people at the Civic Centre and was told that these were "Green Lanes". It appears that these had actually been part of our highway system for hundreds of years and that during the early part of the 20th century, decesions had to be made about which of the roads should be adopted and maintained and which should be left alone. However they still remained the reponsibility of the highways department, in reality they became ignored and forgotten. The landowners either side were still responsible for keeping the hedges cut and strickly speaking the local authority should be carrying out a certain amount of ground work each year. These sunken tracks are an important part of our local history, Archdeacon Coxe when he rode around the county in 1799 reffered to the sunken roads on Monmouthshire, they must have been truly horrific to travel in, particularly in bad weather. These trackways could be thousands of years old, no one really knows, they are wonderful places and the few that remain uncluttered will be coming to life shortly with a fantastic array of wild flowers.
The Countryside people do not want to have anything to do with them as they have limited resources, and as it stands point out that the Highways Department should look after them anyway. The Highways Department aren't interested in looking after them as no one has complained about their condition. Well that's because no one knows what they are. I have now asked for a definitive plan of the Green Lanes of Langstone and I have written to Cllr Attwell asking to meet and look at them. I would be very interested to know if people were aware of these lanes and if not would be prepared to help raise their profile a bit, by simply ringing up the council and complaining that you can't get along one of these lanes because it's blocked. If enough of us begin to ring in I have been told that they would have to consider doing something about it, the very least they could do was ask the landowners either side to cut the hedges.

I was reading an article last week about the continuing rise in UK personal debt.

Quote:

Grant Thornton research shows that the total outstanding UK consumer debt amassed through mortgages, loans and credit cards has increased by 7.3% to ?1,444 billion over the past year up from ?1,346 billion in June 2007. Furthermore, personal debt has forged ahead of UK GDP which, according to latest available data, currently stands at ?1,410 billion having increased by 5.1% in nominal terms over the past year.

The stigma that used to be associated with having personal debt disappeared many years ago. We?re constantly bombardment by television, radio and newspaper ads telling us to borrow money for that ?dream holiday? or ?new car?. Not that long ago, the general attitude was that your lifestyle is dictated by what you earned. These day?s, lifestyle dictated by what you earn plus the amount that you?re prepared to borrow.

It?s a rather ironic setup. Being in debt costs money, that?s how the borrowers make a profit. If you can?t afford the ?dream holiday? then borrowing the money means that you?ll be paying for the holiday plus the cost of borrowing the money! Sounds madness when you think about and actually it is a mad fiscal strategy. Lets? take a look at some numbers to prove just how mad this is.

Suppose you want to buy a car that costs ?5,000. You have two choices: save up the money and but the car when you have enough or borrow the money, buy the car now and pay the money back later. Actually, you have a third choice, don?t buy the car, but lets? assume you ?need? the car. Taking your second choice first, you borrow the ?5,000 at 11.9% APR, buy the car now and payback the loan at ?442.70 per month. After 12 months, you?ll have repaid the full amount at a total cost of ?5,312.40, so that?s ?312.40 in interest charges.

Now let?s look at the first choice. Suppose you put aside ?442.70 per month in a savings account at say 6.55% interest rate. After 12 months you?ll have ?5,474.82 (?5,312.40 savings & ?162.42 interest). By saving the money as apposed to borrowing it you, you not only avoided interest charges, but you also have ?474.82 left over plus ?162.42 in earned interest. Deducting tax on the interest earned, you?ve actually saved yourself over ?600! Ok, you have to take inflation into account but it still remains a significant saving over borrowing the money. Also, you have the added bonus of knowing that you have the money accessible in the bank should your circumstances change and you needed the cash.

So why do so many people borrow?, why don?t we all simply save for the things we want?, it makes financial sense. The problem is that when we decide we want something, we want it now. It?s an emotional desire that can blind our logical thinking. Wanting something now will cost us more than waiting but that?s a price we?re willing to pay. And that?s the emotion that all the banks, loan & credit card companies have homed in on, our non logical desire to have things now. Have that ?dream holiday? now, have that ?new car? now, not in11 months. They sell to our emotions, not to our logic. It doesn?t make sense to get into to debt, it will cost more money, it makes sense to save the money first but it feels so much better to have what you want now.

So when it comes to deciding whether to borrow or save it seems you can satisfy your emotional desires or your fiscal desires but not both.
